The Consolidated Acts and Regulations site is a directory of legislation drafted for various federal departments and agencies that shows an up-to-date version of the law. This is achieved by adding subsequent amendments to an original enactment. The consolidations are generally updated on a weekly basis; the date to which a consolidation is current is given at the top of the first page of the law.
Non-consolidated legislation is published in the Canada Gazette (see Part II for regulations and Part III for Acts.
If you have questions or comments about the interpretation or the applicability of the Acts or regulations you find on this site, you can contact the department, agency or crown corporation responsible for the specific Act or regulation. You can find the department responsible for an Act (and for the regulations made under the authority of the Act) in the Table of Public Statutes and Responsible Ministers, which will also identify the departments for which the ministers are responsible. To find out how to contact the department, agency or crown corporation, you can consult the list of departments and agencies on the Canada Site at http://www.canada.gc.ca/depts/major/depind-eng.html or call 1 800 O-Canada (1-800 622-6232).

Before a proposed bill becomes law, meaning that it has had three readings in both the House of Commons and the Senate and has received royal assent, its progress can be followed through the legislative process with the help of the Hansard Index. Bills are prefixed by the letter "C" if they are first introduced in the House of Commons and the letter "S" if they are first introduced in the Senate. Each bill must pass through both Houses of Parliament before it can receive royal assent.
