An Act to establish the National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy
Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate and House of Commons of Canada, enacts as follows:
SHORT TITLE

1. This Act may be cited as the National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy Act.

2. In this Act,
“Chairperson”

“Chairperson” means the Chairperson of the Round Table appointed pursuant to subsection 6(1);

“member”
Version anglaise seulement“member” means a member of the Round Table appointed pursuant to subsection 6(1) or (2);
“Minister”

“Minister” means such member of the Queen’s Privy Council for Canada as may be designated by the Governor in Council as the Minister for the purposes of this Act;
“President”

“President” means the President of the Round Table appointed under section 10;
“Round Table”
« Organisme »
“Round Table” means the National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy established by section 3;
“sustainable development”
« développement durable »
“sustainable development” means development that meets the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

ESTABLISHMENT OF ROUND TABLE

3. There is established a corporation, to be called the National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy, consisting of a Chairperson and not more than 16 other members to be appointed as provided in section 6.

PURPOSE

4. The purpose of the Round Table is to play the role of catalyst in identifying, explaining and promoting, in all sectors of Canadian society and in all regions of Canada, principles and practices of sustainable development by
(a) undertaking research and gathering information and analyses on critical issues of sustainable development;
(b) advising governments on ways of integrating environmental and economic considerations into their decision-making processes and on global issues of sustainable development;
(c) advising those sectors and regions on ways of incorporating principles and practices of sustainable development into their activities;
(d) promoting the understanding and increasing public awareness of the cultural, social, economic and policy changes required to attain sustainable development; and
(e) facilitating and assisting cooperative efforts in Canada to overcome barriers to the attainment of sustainable development.
