Regulations Respecting the Deposit of Oil in Arctic Waters for Experimental Purposes by Dome Petroleum Limited

His Excellency the Governor General in Council, on the recommendation of the Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development, pursuant to section 4 of the Arctic Waters Pollution Prevention Act, is pleased hereby to make the annexed Regulations respecting the deposit of oil in Arctic Waters for experimental purposes by Dome Petroleum Limited.

Short Title

 These Regulations may be cited as the Arctic Waters Experimental Pollution Regulations, 1982.

Interpretation

 In these Regulations, oil means crude oil taken from the Kopanoar 21-44 well in the Beaufort Sea. (pétrole)

Deposit of Oil

  •  (1) Subject to sections 4 and 5, Dome Petroleum Limited may, for the purposes described in subsection (2), deposit oil in any location in arctic waters within a 100 metre radius of that location having coordinates of 69°57′N latitude and 131°15′W longitude at any time prior to June 1, 1982.

  • (2) The purpose of a deposit referred to in subsection (1) shall be the determination of the behaviour and fate of water-in-oil emulsions deposited under first year sea ice and the evaluation of possible methods for the clean-up of such deposits.

Conditions

 No deposit of oil made pursuant to section 3 shall exceed 0.45 m3 and the aggregate of all such deposits shall not exceed 0.90 m3.

 Dome Petroleum Limited shall remedy any damage to property or the environment resulting from any deposit of oil made pursuant to section 3 as soon as practicable and, in any event, not later than July 31, 1982.
